Welcome Riders
About the Ride
The Fourth Annual Cycle To Serve Bicycle Challenge is a major fund raiser for the Lenoir Rotary Club, which has served this community since 1930 and continues to be involved in many different service projects. Some of these projects include: providing a Christmas party and gifts for 70 disadvantaged children, tutoring and helping provide dictionaries for every third grader in the Caldwell County Schools, Providing lunch for the Special Olympics, sponsoring a Little League baseball team, Sending three students to the Rotary Youth Leadership camp, and funding over $7,000 in educational scholarships. Our goal for this year's ride is to raise $10,000.
There will be three aid stations, and three SAG vehicles patrolling the courses to help riders with any problems. This is a very safe ride, but it is an open course and riders are encouraged to obey all traffic laws. At the twenty mile mark, riders must choose between the 40 mile ride or the 62 mile ride. Both finish in downtown Lenoir, where a wonderful covered dish meal is available free of charge to all riders.
Route Information
When you have one of the best metric centuries in the region, why change anything? The 4th Annual Cycle To Serve Bicycle Challenge will cover the same roads as last year. This is a very rural route, but unlike some, the roads are lightly trafficked and the pavement is smooth, much of it only a year old. There is no better way to test your legs early in the season than by riding underneath the mountains of Boone and Blowing Rock. There are several steep climbs, but none longer than 10-15 minutes, and all followed by fun, safe descents. The routes travel in and out of the valleys to the north and east of Lenoir, beginning and ending in the renovated downtown of Lenoir, a 2008 All America City. Afterwards, refresh yourself in Hogwaller Square (registration site) with your fellow riders over big free covered dish lunch provided by Lenoir Rotarians.
Temperatures in May range from 60 - 80 F. No extra clothing or gear is necessary. Rest stops offering food and fluids are located every 15-20 miles. The terrain is interesting and varied. There is open farmland, densely wooded mountains, wide and narrow valleys, and many creeks flowing beside the roads. There are horse farms, tree farms, and cattle farms. The route opens up regularly to afford big views of the countryside around Lenoir and Caldwell County.
In its first three years, this ride has attracted a good cross section of cyclists, both men and women. Those who complete the 100K course in under 3 hours are clearly very competitive riders, as this is not a flat course (total elevation gain is about 3,500 ft.). Behind them are many others either looking to challenge themselves or just enjoy one of the most beautiful day rides in North Carolina. This ride is popular enough that you can be sure there will be others wanting to ride at your pace too.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT A COOKIE RIDE! THIS RIDE IS FOR CAKE!!!
The top three riders in the 100K and the top two in the 40mile ride will have their pick of cakes prepared and donated by locally renowned cooks and bakers. You can take your prize home or share it with other riders at the finish line, where all will enjoy a free Rotary covered dish lunch. Winners will be called to the stage to make their choice - first finisher gets to pick first, then the second finisher, then the third...
